Surviving And Commemorating: Original Jewish Documents Preserved In The Moreshet Archive

It contends that despite extensive research on this historical period and the advent of modern technology designed to enhance document accessibility, significant archival “treasures” remain buried. Furthermore, the paper asserts that an archivist equipped with historical training is uniquely positioned to bridge gaps in awareness and language barriers, thereby significantly advancing academic scholarship.

To substantiate these claims, the author utilizes case studies from the Holocaust in Slovakia, Romania, and Hungary. The analysis incorporates personal collections of letters, diaries, and photographs from figures such as Haviva Reick, Egon Roth, and Gizi Fleishman in Slovakia, alongside survivor testimonies from Romania and memoirs of Jewish Council members from Hungary. These materials encompass a diverse range of languages, including local vernaculars, Hebrew, and Yiddish. Much of this documentation was donated to the Moreshet Archive in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War by survivors who immigrated to Israel and joined the kibbutz movement.

Drawing upon her extensive experience as the director of the archive, the author argues that an archivist with a background in history can guide researchers toward overlooked materials and assist them in uncovering missing pieces in their work. This dual expertise—functioning as both archivist and historian—is also crucial for engaging with individuals who still retain vital materials and artifacts in their private homes, enabling the assessment of their historical significance and their exposure to the broader public.
