This chapter examines the significant role of Ruzka Korchak (1921–1988) in shaping early Holocaust memory and documentation in postwar Israel. A Polish-born survivor of the Vilna Ghetto and a partisan fighter, Korchak arrived in Mandatory Palestine in December 1944 and immediately began sharing her experiences through public speeches and writing. Her 1946 book, Flames in the Ashes, was one of the earliest survivor accounts published in Hebrew.
The chapter explores Korchak’s multifaceted contributions to Holocaust remembrance, including her later efforts to collect and preserve documents from the Holocaust and her founding role in the Moreshet Holocaust Archive. Based on Korchak’s personal letters and interviews, the study illuminates her complex position as a central figure in early Holocaust commemoration and as a woman often overshadowed by male counterparts in the public’s memory.
By analyzing Korchak’s life and work, this research contributes to broader discussions on gender, memory, politics, and historical representation in Holocaust studies. It highlights the crucial role women played in preserving and sharing Holocaust experiences while also examining the gendered nature of public memory work in postwar Israel.
