Goebbels, Nazi propaganda, and the Holocaust during the Last Year of WWII

This lecture examines the pivotal role of Joseph Goebbels during the final year of the Second World War (1944–1945), analyzing how his propaganda machine sustained the Nazi regime’s radical policies and accelerated the “Final Solution” even as military defeat loomed on all fronts.

Key themes explored in the presentation include:

  • The Architect of Total War: Following the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt against Hitler, Goebbels seized the political opportunity to forge an alliance with Albert Speer, successfully pushing for total mobilization and radicalizing the German home front.

  • Fanatical Antisemitism: Unlike military leaders who occasionally questioned strategic realities, Goebbels maintained a pathological, uncompromising hatred toward Jews, viewing the acceleration of mass extermination as a core mission to be completed before the regime’s collapse.

  • Delusion and the Cinematic Final Stand: Examining Goebbels’ production of the multi-million-reichsmark epic propaganda film Kolberg in 1944 to inspire civilian resistance, alongside his close manipulation of Hitler within the Berlin bunker.

  • The Wagnerian End: The study concludes with Goebbels orchestrating the final dramatic act of the Third Reich—committing suicide alongside his wife Magda and their six children on May 1, 1945, to avoid capture and cement a dark mythological legacy.
