This lecture examines the complex and often harrowing experiences of Jewish women within partisan units in Lithuania and Belarus during World War II, based on survivor testimonies. Initially silenced or hesitant to speak, women later broke decades of silence to document their realities.
Upon escaping the ghettos, women faced immediate hostility, neglect, and skepticism from Soviet partisans regarding their combat capabilities. While a few exceptional individuals attained leadership roles—such as the communist commander Chiena Borovska—most women endured severe hardship, hunger, lack of hygiene, and profound vulnerability to sexual abuse and exploitation. Furthermore, during critical military crises, such as the 1943 German manhunts in the Naroch forests, women were frequently abandoned by partisan leadership and left without weapons or protection.
Despite systemic maltreatment, women demonstrated extraordinary resilience and mutual solidarity. Figures like Yocheved Reznik acted as caregivers, saving frostbitten fighters, while others navigated pregnancy and perilous conditions under constant threat. Ultimately, these testimonies reveal that female partisans relied heavily on feminine solidarity and profound personal strength to survive both enemy forces and a hostile environment.
