This article explores the personal correspondence of Moshe Hoch, a young member of the underground Jewish group Lehi who was detained without trial by British authorities from 1944 to 1948.
A Short Life of Torment and Sacrifice: The Letters of Moshe Hoch from the African Detention, 1944–1948
Deported during “Operation Snowball,” Hoch spent over four years interned in various camps across Eritrea, Sudan, and Kenya alongside hundreds of other right-wing underground members. Analyzing these letters as ego documents, the study reveals how personal correspondence acts as a crucial historical source that complements official records.
Rather than unmediated windows into reality, Hoch’s letters are examined through their constraints—including official and self-censorship designed to shield his family from distress—and their role in maintaining psychological resilience and personal identity. Despite the harsh conditions of political detention and forced exile, Hoch maintained an optimistic, observant tone, meticulously detailing daily routines, educational pursuits like accounting, and his deep intellectual curiosity regarding the unfamiliar African landscapes.
The correspondence captures his unwavering commitment to Zionism, his intense involvement in the fate of Mandatory Palestine despite the distance, and his family’s tireless legal efforts to secure his release. Following the UN partition plan and the declaration of the State of Israel, Hoch and his fellow detainees were finally liberated, arriving back in Israel in July 1948. Tragically, just five months after his long-awaited return and his enlistment in the newly formed Israel Defense Forces, Hoch was killed in battle against the Egyptian army at the age of twenty-five. Ultimately, this research demonstrates how ego documents provide an invaluable “history-from-below” perspective, illuminating the human dimension of political imprisonment and the complex interplay between individual survival and national struggle.
